Even bacon. Sigh.
Around 1.5 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and with that number ever growing, its time to really examine what is in our food and daily products that might be contributing to this statistic. With the rise of GMOs and the absence of FDA testing, it easy to overlook ingredients, chemicals, and whatever else that will literally kill us. Thanks to us however, reading this list will make you that much more informed and that much more less likely to die from cancer. You’re welcome
ALCOHOL:
Something you probably didn’t know, alcohol use is the second leading cause of cancer, right behind tobacco use. Which can be confusing because drinking a glass of wine a day can lower your risk of cancer. So I guess the moral of this story is, everything in moderation.
CANNED TOMATOES:
But if we are being really honest, its anything that has been canned because its lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA. BPA is known to change the way genes work in a rats brain. Canned tomatoes are especially dangerous because of their acidity which makes the BPA leak out into the food. Buy glass stored tomatoes instead!
FARMED SALMON:
Just like buying free range chicken is a good idea, buying wild salmon is a GREAT idea. Farmed salmon are fed unnatural diets that contain chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides, and other known carcinogens. Because of this destructive diet, farmed salmon don’t have as much as those healthy omega 3 fats that you are looking for. Also fun fact: because of their cramped living spaces, farmed salmon have 30 times the number of sea lice (aka parasites) as wild salmon. Gross.
PROCESSED MEAT:
As a bacon, salami, and sausage lover (get your head out of the gutter), this news is devastating. Alas, processed meats contain numerous chemicals and preservatives, including sodium nitrates (makes it look fresh and delicious) which are well known carcinogens.
MICROWAVE POPCORN
Yup. Your favorite movie snack. According to Wikipedia, microwave popcorn bags are lined with a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). A University of California study just announced that PFOA is linked to infertility in women. Other studies done on lab animals and humans show that exposure to PFOA increases the risk of liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancers. Our advice: Buy a whirly pop. It’s healthier, and SO MUCH FUN TO USE!
POTATO CHIPS
Yes, potato chips are unhealthy but cancer causing too? Yep. They are fried in extremely high oil temperatures that create a substance called acrylamide, a carcinogen that is also happens to be found in cigarettes.
SODA
It’s no surprise that with all of those empty sugar calories, soda can do some damage. Not only does it lead to cancer, you’re also at a higher risk of suffering from a stroke, getting diabetes, annnnd gastro-esophageal reflux disease (which basically is your stomach acid burning your esophagus). I’ll have a water thank you.
HYDROGENATED OILS
Anything that is a vegetable oil is hydrogenated. Unlike butter, which can be extracted and made naturally, vegetable oils need to go through a chemical process to get the oils separated. Then, because humans are unreasonably picky, the oils need to be deodorized and colored so that it looks safe and “natural” to cook with. Once we consume it, the oils can then influence our cell membranes’ structure and flexibility, which leaves us more vulnerable to cancer.
HIGHLY PROCESSED WHITE FLOORS
Once upon a time, after grinding the wheat, mills would wait for their flour to turn white with time before packaging and delivering it to your door step. Well, they don’t have time for that now and our flour is bleached with chlorine gas to turn it white. By refining these grains, all of their nutrients are destroyed leaving you with a flour with a VERY high glycemic rate raising your blood sugar level and insulin levels.
GOM'S
Genetically Modified Organisms. Sounds scary, Are scary. GMO’s are basically any foods that have been modified by chemicals and grown with chemicals. There are NO FDA testing procedures so there really is no telling how bad they are for you. But, we can tell you that testing done on lab rats have resulted in damaged immune systems, pre-cancerous cell growths and smaller brains and livers after ten days. Scary.
REFINED SUGARS
In 1931, the Nobel laureate in medicine, German Otto Warburg, discovered that tumors and cancers both use sugars to “feed” themselves and to increase in size. They especially like high-fructose corn syrup. You can see why this is something you want to stay away from.
ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
If you haven’t gotten it yet, Processed/Artificial = Bad, Natural = Good. Artificial sweeteners are made with chemicals, especially aspartame. There are multiple studies that prove these sweeteners break down in the body into a toxin called DKP which is a direct link to cancer.
